Infineon's QAM-VDSL Gains Wide Support in Japan; Ando Selects Infineon's Standards Compliant Packet

Tokyo, Japan – July 3, 2002 – Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX), a leading provider of integrated circuits (ICs) for advanced communication systems, today announced that Ando Electric Co. Ltd., an industry leader in the design of cutting edge digital and optical communications solutions, has selected Infineon’s ITU-T standard compliant Packet over VDSL (PoVDSL) chipset for its video-transmission capable VDSL solution.

Ando’s VDSLAM (Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) system will be shown in the Infineon booth - Hall 1, #1W33 - at the Networld+Interop exhibition, Tokyo, Japan, July 3 – 5, 2002.

Ando’s VDSL access system integrates Infineon’s PoVDSL chipset in both the DSLAM (VDSLAM AT 6401) and customer premises modem. It supports symmetric packet data transmission, including multi-channel video, at data rates up to 40 Mbps over distances of 1.5 km (4500 ft) and higher bit rates in shorter loops. The ITU-T standard compliant PoVDSL chipset is based on the widely deployed QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) line modulation technique. This proven technology enables a simple and rapid design of cost-effective broadband-over-copper DSLAM and CPE systems.

“Infineon’s PoVDSL chipset is a proven solution for the transport of video and data over more than 1km of standard copper telephone wiring,” said Yoshinobu Fukuda, General Manager Network Division, Ando Electric Co, Ltd. “On the DSLAM side, the reduced foot-print of the chipset supports the quick roll-out of high density systems that will help to accelerate the deployment of ITU-T standard VDSL in Japan,” he
added.

“The demand for VDSL based DSLAMs is increasing in Japan, and the technology choices made by market leaders such as Ando will define the dominant platforms for the next generation of broadband access solutions,” said Yasuaki Mori, President of Infineon Japan. “Fully compliant with the ITU VDSL standard requirements, our Packet over VDSL chipset adds additional capabilities to DSL access systems by enabling high-speed Ethernet services at distances over 10 times that of the traditional LAN,” added Mr. Mori.
